Noise-Induced Transitions in a Barotropic b-Plane Channel

چکیده
The concepts of multiplicative stochastic perturbations and noise-induced transitions are applied to a quasigeostrophic b-plane model of barotropic flow over topography. The spectral three-component low-order representation of this configuration yields the Charney–DeVore (CDV) model. The externally prescribed damping of the system is allowed to scatter around a mean value. The stochastic representation of the damping term leads to a multiplicative stochastic forcing. The Fokker–Planck equation and the stochastic differential equation of the low-order CDV model are solved numerically. It is found that the qualitative behavior of the system is a function of the multiplicative noise level. In particular, the effect of multiplicative noise is not simply a smoothing of the probability density function, as it would be for pure additive noise. Rather, multiplicative noise leads to the high-index state being favored over the low-index state. The concept of noise-induced transitions explains this behavior. The noise-induced transition of the stochastic low-order model is confirmed by numerical integrations of a corresponding gridpoint model with many more degrees of freedom than the spectral model. It is suggested that the statistics of the unresolved physical processes could be an important factor in understanding the behavior of midlatitude large-scale atmospheric dynamics.

Vanishing Viscosity in the Barotropic b-Plane
The initial boundary value problems associated with the inviscid barotropic potential vorticity equation in the b-plane and its viscous analogue are considered. It is shown that the solution velocity to the viscous equation converges to the inviscid solution in a C1 sense for finite times and that, under additional smoothness assumptions on the inviscid flow, this convergence can be extended to...
متن کاملThe Contribution of Striations to the Eddy Energy Budget and Mixing: Diagnostic Frameworks and Results in a Quasigeostrophic Barotropic System with Mean Flow
Low-frequency oceanicmotions have banded structures termed ‘‘striations.’’ Since these striations embedded in large-scale gyre flows can have large amplitudes, the authors investigated the effect of mean flow on their directions as well as their contribution to energetics and mixing using a b-plane, barotropic, quasigeostrophic ocean model. In spite of the model simplicity, striations are alway...
متن کاملStrategies for Model Reduction: Comparing Different Optimal Bases
Several different ways of constructing optimal bases for efficient dynamical modeling are compared: empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs), optimal persistence patterns (OPPs), and principal interaction patterns (PIPs). Past studies on fluid-dynamical topics have pointed out that EOF-based models can have difficulties reproducing behavior dominated by irregular transitions between different dyna...

The method of lattice boltzmann equation(LBE) is a kinetic-based approach for fluid flow computations. In the last decade, minimal kinetic models, and primarily the LBE, have met with significant success in the simulation of complex hydrodynamic phenomena, ranging from slow flows in grossly irregular geometries to fully developed turbulence, to flow with dynamic phase transitions. In the presen...
متن کاملThe Dynamic Role of Ridges in a #-plane
In this thesis, the dynamic role of bottom topography in a #3-plane channel is systematically studied in both linear homogeneous and stratified layer models in the presence of either wind stress (Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 6) or buoyancy forcing (Chapter 5). In these studies, the structure of the geostrophic contour plays a fundamental role, and the role of bottom topography is looked at from two di...
